An operating system can make all the difference when hosting a website. There are a lot of different operating systems out on the market, but when it comes to website hosting, there are 2 main contenders;  Windows and Linux.  As Linux was the first operating system to be compatible with web hosting, it may automatically have the advantage over Windows to a lot of people. this is largely true, but sufficient proof must be shown to back up the statement.

One of the first and most important reason Linux is said to have the advantage is that Linux has much higher security settings than Windows. The security-enhanced distros with Linux protect servers from attack, and help to make overall security tighter.  That being said, Windows can have its security settings tightened to make web hosting safer and more secure.

Hosting packages that use Linux are generally cheaper than Windows ones, giving an obvious advantage of Linux over Windows. People say that the lower price could affect the overall website hosting experience, but this is not the case, with settings usually more efficient than a Windows web hosting package.

If you use a test server, then you need to make sure your web hosting package is compatible with it. Many stories have been told where websites have become corrupt and damaged, simply because people test their site on a windows test server, then make the site live on a Linux server.

With advantages for both operating systems, when it comes to choosing the right Web hosting operating system, a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Choose something you can work with and is easily accessible to you. For instance, do not choose a Linux setup, when your office only allows a Windows setup, and vice-versa.
