Many people have experienced huge blows when making simple mistakes with their website hosting. People often view web hosting to be a trivial and minor thing, whilst actually website hosting is one of the most important aspects of your whole website. People have lost whole websites through easy to make mistakes, and this can potentially ruin your business, or at least put it out of action for a while. Below are some of the most common mistakes people make with web hosting, and how you can avoid them.
First of all, ever heard the saying ” too good to be true” I am sure most of you reading will have done, and this phrase applies to website hosting. That’s not to say quality and affordable hosting is not available, but when you see for instance a years worth of web hosting for $2 walk away. Sure, once in a hundred times it would probably be as it says, but would you really want to risk your whole website just for saving $5 a month?
When you sign up for website hosting, be sure to specify the exact terms you require. This may not apply for small personal websites, but for large corporate websites, you will often write up some sort of document detailing the terms of your web hosting. If you decide mid way through the hosting you want extras which are not included in your current hosting plan, the hosting company may charge you a huge premium to get those extras, or they may just deny it altogether.
Check the hosting site out. If it looks shabby and unprofessional then move one, if a website can’t take the time to get their own website looking spic and span, chances are they won’t care too much about yours.
Just because a website has a lot of “good” testimonials, does not mean that the site is safe. IF you suspect something is up, ask the web hosting company to get the customers who left the feedback to get in touch with you directly. If the hosting company refuse, than be aware, things may not be as they seem.
There are more things to think about when taking out website hosting. Always double check your terms and conditions, and if in doubt get on the phone, speak to someone from the company, make sure you have an address and contact details in case something goes wrong. Remember, if it doesn’t feel right, walk away.
